Reflections -- Sylvia & Jerry

Merry Christmas from NW Arkansas.

December 2010

Another year has flown by with even more blessings than usual. We stay busy, healthy and happy. We hope that the past year(s) have been as good to you. Sylvia recovered nicely from the back surgery she had last December. She still has other aches and pains, but not the really bad ones in the lower back. Jerry has had a great year bouncing between fit and rotund, but otherwise is quite healthy. Sadie is, at this moment, recovering from AC ligament surgery to right rear leg. Pathetic at her best, she is looking particularly sad right now. According to the vet, she is doing well and will be as good as new in about 6 weeks.

We are really enjoying our new house on the lake. After being empty for nearly two years , it needed lots of painting and touch up. We finished nearly all the chores inside and most of painting outside, moving in on April Fool's Day. There is still a lot of landscaping to catch up on, but we can now take our time and enjoy the chance to improve our setting. While we greatly appreciate the beauty and tranquility of our lake, we haven't made the time to enjoy it fully. For sure we need to make more time for fishing. However, until we get the other house sold, we'll still be quite busy.

In late September, we traveled to NE Canada's Maritime Provinces with sister Joyce & hubby Kenn for this year's big trip. It was a great vacation. It is a big, rough and tough area – like Alaska – with small fishing villages, magnificent landscapes and great seafood. The best part was that we had many opportunities to interact with our hosts and found the Canadians extremely friendly, helpful and sincere. Among the highlights of our trip was L'Anse aux Meadows, a viking settlement in northern Newfoundland dating from 1002. Other stops included early (18th century) , reconstructed British and French settlements. Just barely back, we've already started planning next year's trip to Greece.

We both still keep active. Sylvia continues working three days a week for the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. She enjoys the work, the organization and her co-workers. Jerry was a bit lazier, although he worked with AARP doing taxes during the spring with some district-level responsibilities and he also developed a web site for a local hospice. Swears he is going to do some soup kitchen work this spring and maybe a college course. We've had some welcome visitors and some lovely local trips. We'll also be going to the old country to visit Sylvia's family over Christmas.

Bentonville is really growing. Next year we should have a great, new art museum (www.crystalbridgesmuseum.org), an equally grand hotel, and the new WalMart Museum opening plus construction starting on a new a 2200-set art center.

We think next year will be less eventful than this year...a few adventures and hopefully lots of lovely, lazy days on the lake. We look forward to hearing from you this holiday season. We would also enjoy a visit should you find yourself anywhere near this lovely corner of Arkansas.

Again, a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and yours!
